Atal Bhujal Yojana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This scheme will promote panchayat-led groundwater management.” The scheme is expected to benefit about 8,350 gram panchayats in 78 districts of these states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a national scheme for groundwater conservation with an outlay of ₹6,000 crore. The Union Cabinet has already approved the Atal Bhujal Yojana. Prime Minister Modi launched the scheme on the occasion of the 95th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
“This scheme will promote behaviour change by focusing on Panchayat-led groundwater management and demand-side management. Around 65 per cent of the total irrigated area in the country is derived from groundwater,” Prime Minister Modi said.
The scheme will be implemented over a period of five years from 2020 to 2025. The scheme aims to improve groundwater management through community participation in certain priority areas of seven states – Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
The scheme is expected to benefit around 8,350 Gram Panchayats located in 78 districts of these states.
